I’ve learned that the internet is a wonderfully horrendous place, and even the people who claim to be open-minded have their low points. This would be one of them. I never get riled up over posts like this, but when people start generalizing my religion to such an extent, I practically burst and write incoherent posts like this one. And before I start, I’d like to give a warning that I lack the ability to articulate my thoughts with any type of eloquence. I’m just writing the first thing that comes to mind.
First of all, I dress like this. When I go out, I cover myself fully, occasionally covering my face as well. No, I am not forced to do so. My dad isn’t beating me up, forcing it upon me. I am a young adult, a graphic designer, a sneaker fanatic, a Chuck E. Cheese junkie, and a Muslim. I’m an American, born and raised. I have the same rights, same privileges, same freedom as all of you. So will I not be respected if I continue to dress like this? Does covering myself make me any less human?
What people don’t understand is the difference between culture and religion. They always generlize all of the cultures in the East as being Islam, yet they distinctly differentiate between their own religion and Western culture. Yes, I agree with those who said that no culture is perfect. Yet it’s not Islam that beats up women and oppresses them, it’s culture. There are some pretty messed up people out there who think it’s all right to treat women like they’re nothing. But why do we automatically think that it’s Islam that causes them to do that? It’s disgusting how instantaneously people make assumptions. So when you see someone dressed like this, do you automatically think that this woman is oppressed by some male?
Islam honors its women. Muslim women cover because we are more than just pieces of meat that are only worthy of being looked at. We are full of character and personality and creativity and humor. By covering, people can see us for who we really are and not just the flesh that covers us. It brings our inner beauty out. There are plenty of cultures in the East that don’t understand this. Everyone has the right to decide what they want to do with themselves, and nobody else has the right to force it upon them. Unfortunately, they do force it upon women even though that’s not part of Islam.
This is ridiculously long and will probably be deleted by tomorrow morning. I just needed to get that off my chest. It’s sad to see that so many people think that Muslim women are oppressed. Maybe the people on Tumblr aren’t as accepting as they make themselves seem.
